Offer him $100 and go from there. Not knowing if there are any cracks, breaks or welds? There is ALOT of different factors that go into an engines value. Almost any complete old engine is worth $100. If its complete, not busted or broke I wouldnt go higher than $300. On the JD model "e" engines the name is worth more than the engine its self. And the MAG is worth more than that. They are a good starter engine for someone wanting to get into the engine hobby. Since all the parts are being reproduced and easy to get. The serial # is on the MAG side on the engine on the govoner cover behind the flywheel. Unless its the early model that has the tag on the back of the engine below the gas tank fill hole. I think if they didnt have the JD name on the side of them nobody would have bought them, they are cheap built, oil sling'n, bad magneto "sobs". I should know I have one! lol Good luck.

I have started lurking around the hit and miss forum looking for something on the JD engines,Maybe I should have looked more before I bought the ones that I did if they are as you described. I asked a Mr, Voight a question from one of his posts on the JD tractor forum and got a nice personal response from him. I collect JD tractors and stumbled on a set of 3 Deere engines plus a Waterloo Boy which I think is a 2 hp. I will most likely annoy someone by asking so many questions about them as I have never owned or even started a hit and miss engine.
