The terminals are (A)rm and (F)ield. Connecting a battery to ground and the (A) terminal will make it act as a motor (starter), and turn CW, the same way as it will need to be run to generate electricity. To make it generate, it needs to be connected to it's voltage regulator, or at the very least, will need a low-ohms value resistor connected between the (F) terminal and ground. If using it without the regulator, which includes an internal "cutout" relay, it will discharge a battery connected to it when shut down, so a battery (if used) MUST be religiously disconnected at shutdown. Do you intend to use it's "start" function? If not, there are better choices for a generator, if much power output is desired. To make it a "starter/generator" compromises in the windings are made, limiting power output to about 10 or 12 Amps. If you don't need the "start" function, another generator with a greater charging output, or an alternator would be a better choice for powering up a display of lights.
