Regular readers may remember the Maytag 92 I"ve posted about several times over the past year. This has been fairly low on my priority list, but with cooler weather and less daylight, I"ve had a bit of time to work on it. The flywheel finally surrendered after three months with the puller attached to it and tightened whenever I chanced to pass by. The electricals cleaned up nicely, and after I re-assembled the flywheel and cleaned up the (slightly mushroomed and battered) threads on the end of the crank, they throw a nice spark. The points were opening almost an eighth of an inch, so I re-gapped them to 0.020". I fabbed up a new check valve for the carb, cut new gaskets, and re-assembled the engine. It started right up initially, but now it won"t run--I suspect I"m getting an air leak somewhere, so I"m going to pull the carb and probably re-do the gaskets again. Also, the original (round, slotted) screws holding the carb on are pretty dinged up--I"ll probably replace them with bolts for the time being until I locate proper replacements. Thanks to all who offered advice--sure is fun to hear the little gal run again!

Glad that little gal ran for ya!! Maytag engines are fun and there great. For a note the 92's carb bolts are brass, And they orginally had a soft lead washer under each of the 4 mounting points.
These can be obtained today in the most excellent repros there are from Bob Blin. His website is on this reply! Enjoy!

Papa: Thanks for the parts link! I noticed that the original screws were brass, but I've replaced them with 1/4" bolts for the time being--the heads were wallowed out too much to tighten properly. I ended up making new washers by flattening lead muzzleloader balls and punching appropriate-sized washers from those. I've got a few leaks, which I think is why it won't stay running. I can crank it over with my drill and get it to fire, but it won't stay running. Haven't had much chance to play around with it the last couple of days, but hoping for some more time later next week.
