I have what appears to be a 1 1/2 hp model M stationary engine. Can't find a data plate anywhere, though. Where is it located? How can I tell for sure what model it is, or narrow down the year. One book I looked at said the 1930-1932 ones had a lever for retarding the spark to start it. Mine has that. It has a Wico EK mag.

Are you sure it's not an IHC? I'm not aware of an "M" was made by McCormick-Deering.
The first wyco was put on them in 1924 and used through 1932. Look on the end of the crankshaft or on the flywheel istelf for a serial number.
A pic would help.
