I have aquired a 10 KW Kohler generator driven by a VH4D. It has been setting up for a number of years, It has no spark, the points look good but I don't know what to do next. I don't have any information on either the engine or generator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry,
I too have just acquired an older Kohler 10KW generator, 10RMY62 with a VH4D Wisconsin engine. Mine has 856 hours on the "clock". It's set up to run on NAT GAS but I am going to run it on LP.... Painted a dark blue.. Have been reading these posts and looking in the various places on the block for mfg date but only thing I can find is a casting tag that has T-11B or T-118, can't distinguish whether it's a B or an 8.. I took the cover off the electrical controls and found a wiring diagram that says "made in 2/3/1966" and has the assemblers initial "LF" and checked by "RBS"..Seeing that the last two digits in the Wisc ser no. are 68 I assume it was built in 68... So if yours has a 18"x18"x16" box sitting on top of the gen itself with the guages, switches and ckt brkr, take that cover off and see if you have such a diag in there..I was lucky enough to find a manual on ebay that has a Warranty in the back that says warranty in effect 1969, so this book will cover my engine...Of course after I "won" this on auction I find that Continintal Engines has any manual for any engine, if I remember correct it was $18.95 + shpng, would have been cheaper thru Continintal !! Sure would like to find a manual on the GenSet itself!! If you want to e-m me direct maybe we could keep each other posted on anything we run up against..

Even if the points look good they may have a film on them and they are no making contact so clean them up with a point file or some sand paper. If you use sand paper clean the point with some clean paper pinched inthe point and then pulled out. Also check/replace the condenser. After you get fire, some caps on the Wisconsin mag will have turned gray with age and will not be water proof. Use clear acrylic paint to seal the cap which will cause the cap to turn black and look new again. After you seal the cap, then you can paint it the same as your genset for even more protection. I did this with a 180 amp Lincoln portable welder with a THD Wisconsin which lives on a trailer out in the weather where it will start even after it has been rained on.

Thanks Kent, You were right, I filed the points and changed the condensor and that took care of the problem.
The engine starts right up. Is this engine designed to where it can run continuously for 2 or 3 days without damage? I'm about to be visited by huricane Ivan and want to be prepared.

Change the oil and filters or services the oil bath air cleaner if so equipped and hope for the best. My only experiance with these engines is in a farm setting( Hay Baler). These engines have tappered roller bearing mains and depending on the year of manufacture either poured or insert rod bearing. How is this unit fueled? LPG or gasoline.

Kent, This unit operates on gas. I just serviced the unit, getting ready for an extended run. Thanks for all your help, Jerry
