Wisconsin VG4D Head

I am having a problem with a Wisconsin VG4D Motor. For the third time the left head has blown a hole through itself. I have tried spot welding and Aluminum welding the hole closed but with no lasting results. The hole keeps blowing through in a line between the sparkplug and the dividing wall between the heads. My first question would be what the heck causes it (my thought is metal fatigue) The second question is where can I purchase a new (used) head without buying the whole motor. Any help with either question would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Is all the sheet metal shrouding in place? This is very important for any air-cooled engine..
Secondly, you might have excessive carbon in the cylinder; on the piston or the inside of the head.
There were at least two different heads used on this engine. The standard, and the high-altitude (or LP-gas) head. Different casting numbers.

I'm having the same problem with my vg4d except it's blowing out towards the top left side of the head. mine will run for about 30 min or so than the gasket blows out, it's happened 3 times now and one of those times I had to fill in a gouge in the head that was melted/blown out. I put a straight edge on the head & block everytime to make sure its not warped and it looks good plus I checked the advance and it's working so I'm at a loss for ideas. I do know that that corner of the head is getting hot because the bolts seem heat stress when I removed them, they had a rusted color look and came out hard, the metal covers are all on and the fan is turning so its getting air circulating over the motor. I torqued the head bolts to 35lbs the first time it blew than 40lbs second time. Anyone have any ideas?

There's a guy selling Wisconsin stuff on ebay, says he has lots more not listed. Might be worth contacting him for a head.

Make sure the advance mechanism in the distributor is not rusted/stuck. I have had this happen with engines stored/used in damp conditions. With the advance stuck in the full advance position,they will detonate hard enough to break heads. With the dist cap removed,twist the rotor in the direction of distributor rotation. The rotor should move about 10 degrees,then snap back to the retarded position when released. If it is stiff or stuck,work penetrating oil onto the hollow shaft under the rotor.
