It won't start. Barely pops with some starting fluid.
Great spark - I got a NOS magneto on eBay.
Rebuilt carb.
Compression is only 35 psi. I think this is low? Is this the problem?
Took the head off and the valves, piston and cylinder look OK.
Please help me get this engine running.

It turns out that the last guy who worked on the engine screwed up. I was told it had been "running recently." There is no way that it has run since it was rebuilt. I tore the engine down and the cam-crank timing were off!. There was a stray mark on the cam and he lined that up with the crank mark instead of the correct timing marks. I timed it correctly and put it all back together. Compression is now 80 psi. It started on the FIRST PULL. I need to get a new head gasket because this one now leaks. But, it purrs like a kitten now. Thanks again!

Put a few drops of engine oil in the cylinder to bring the compression up.

With a tough old engine like this that has sat a while, if you can belt it up to another engine or an electric motor to spin it over, getting it started the first time will be a snap!

I tried the oil and rigged a drill to drive a nut on the crank instead of the rope pull. Still no luck.

Make sure you spin it slow enough for the impulse to fire. Also check the timing. If you have spark at the right time, gas, and compression, it should go. Try putting 1-2 teaspoons of gas straight into the cylinder through the spark plug hole & see if it fires. Usually once they spin a little while the start right up.

Have you tried a different spark plug, and is your magneto timing correct?
