McCormick Deering M Running Poorly

I have a McC-D 1 1/2 M with a Wico EK ignition system - my first antique engine restoration project. It was running reasonably well when I first got it going but is now running poorly. It hits on every other power stroke without load, but, strangely enough, hits on every power stroke under a slight load. It is also hard to start where before it would start easily. I have tried to clean the carb and have a new plug in it. Any suggestions? I would think that ignition problems would show up under load so I am leaning toward a problem in the carb. Compression and timing are good.

As with all engines, it's good (and easy) to check the spark. Just take an old plug and clean it up on the wire brush. Attach your plug wire to it and set it on top of the water hopper or other place where you will get a good ground. Crank the engine over several times and examine the spark. It should be a nice blue snappy spark. Anything less is weak and may contribute to other problems. If you get good spark, then pull the other plug and check it for soot build up. If really sooty, then you're too rich and need to adjust the mixer.
