Posted here some time ago about the same problem. Update. vg4d starter grinds bendix will not engage five or six times out of ten on an unattended engine. 4 new starters and bendix. New ring gear. Starter repair shop says there is two bendix listed for engine. Maybe some one put wrong one on before. Changed to one less tooth on bendix. Engages 99 per cent of the time now but acts like it is binding up in part of the revolution. Doesn't turn engine like it should in my opinion. Will one tooth make this much difference? Any other ideas?

You need to get the flywheel off, and have a GOOD look at the ring gear for damaged teeth. If you can't see a problem, remove the sheet metal housing, and re-install the flywheel. Use some type of a "pointer" held near the ring gear as it is rotated by hand, or better yet, a dial indicator, and see if the ring gear wobbles as you slowly turn the engine over by hand. (Spark plugs out, ignition system disabled.)

This will probably show why you have a "binding part of the revolution".

While you're at it, check over the sheet metal housing for any damage by mounting holes, or anything that might affect the distance relationship between the starter and the ring gear.
