Greetings to All! I was cleaning out calf pens and noticed something going on with the motor in the skid steer. The right side exhaust was glowing RED!!!!. It was running o.k.?? After closer observation the exhaust on the left was glowing too, but not nearly as bad as the right side. It does this at full throttle, and quits glowing when i back the throttle down. Any of you Guys got any ideas as to what would cause this??? Also ,I've been thinking that if this Onan engine starts to give me grief I'd like to put a V-4 Wisconsin in it. Would this be be a pain to do? I'm not predjudice, but I haven't heard to many good things about Onans, But I've heard Wisconsins have their quiks too, but are more dependable. the skid steer is a good little machine and has served me well.I'd just as soon put a different motor in it vs trading it off. Any Ideas??? thanxxx , joe...

It's true, lean running will cause excessive heat, also, if the timing is off causing the exhaust valve to stay open too long will cause excessive heat coming out the manifold. I have heard of mufflers on small engines getting red hot at night though I never saw it first hand. I would definately find the problem is I were you because if those exhaust valves get too hot, then they would have to be replaced cause they will worp from the heat.

I have a 24 hp Onan pulling a generator and if the mixture gets a little bit lean for fuel, it will turn the exhaust a bright cherry red. When that happens, I only have to open the main jet a bit and it settles back down. Looks really wierd to see the echaust pipe a cherry red and can't see anything else at night when the generator is really barking out the ac current to the house. Gene

Joe: If the engine is running all right--no smoking, knocking, etc., I wouldn't worry about the exhaust turning red. I've seen small engines that would turn the entire pipe red out to a foot or more past the exhaust manifold with no ill effects. More than likely your exhaust pipe is getting thin and thus will heat up quicker than it did when it was new.

In low light the exhaust on many gasoline engines will glow red. AS to the Honda in a skid steer, a friend of mine got a little skid steer which had been converted to electric. So one suggested a Honda as a replacement. He said he had been told a Honda would not take skid steer service. Take this information as you will as I have no direct experiance with a Honda in this use

If you want to put a real good motor in it, check to see if you can find a Honda that will match up.
