I have a 12.5 briggs&stratton riding lawmower which is a little hard to start, but once running sounds fine for about 1 to 2 minutes then goes dead. It was smoking but I had the oil level to high.I drained and refilled now no smoke but still engine stalls.Any suggestions on where to start would be greatly apreciated.thanks

you might want to pull float bowl off of carburator and clean out debris. also take a can of carburator cleaner and clean gunk out of all orifices. Sounds like some contaminates or water in the carburator. Drain old fuel out of tank and refill with fresh gas!

I don't know if it is the carb or the gov. The engine runs at very high RPM after the warm up time. Please refer me to the problem

First, I would recommend that you replace your sparkplug and then either clean or replace your air filter. When a B&S engine is overfilled with oil, the oil is normally sucked into the carburetor and air filter through the crankcase breather. Hope this will help you!

I have the same trouble with a 3.5 hp lawn mower.
Engine starts nicely, but surges after starting. It begins to sound like the spark is firing as the rotation slows to stop. There is a loss of power and as the mower is tilted up, it wants to quit. There appears to be no speed limiter or fuel problem. The exhaust appear to be clear. Really a baffling problem.

I don't know how to get in and ask a question on my own so I hope someone can help me this way. I run a 15.5 hp on my Murray, It starts good but when I put it under a load such as start the blades it sputters, coughs and back fires extremly loud. I just installed new plug, new filters, and new selnoid. What is wrong ????

I am having the same problem with my 18hp v twin. I have had the carb rebuilt by a prof. and still have the same problem. It seems to happen when i am mowing my side lot (doesn't matter how high the grass is), i get about two passes around and then all of a sudden it goes from running great to the problems listed in the last post. I am really stumped, can someone out there offer advice?
