Bought a K model and a ZZP at an auction.I already have both running. K was built May 1935. ZZP built May 1942, Say special in the model number area with a star inplace of the "a" in special. Also had remains of sheilded/ sealed aircraft plug wire. I have replaced the wire with a newer sheilded plug wire and spark plug. What are these engines worth?

Kent, good to hear ya back out here again. Congrats on your engines, sounds like you know what you're doing with them. It seems like the old Briggs aren't worth alot, but they're worth more than they were 10 years ago. I would think the K in good shape would bring $150 or so, and the ZZP maybe $175 to $200 in good shape. The Z's were the biggest Briggs in their time and I think they are way underpriced at this point. Does yours have the oil-bath air cleaner on it? I'm the guy that has the Z with zero compression that you told to remove the valve plate behind the carb to check. Now I'm starting to get interested in it again, now that you have yours running. I'll have to drag it into the shop to work on, but I'm curious just where the plate is and how big it is? I was thinking I'd probably have to pull the head on it. Might not be as bad as I thought...Thanks for any help...Baggsy

The plate which is behind the carb. covers the valve spring chamber. You will be able to tell if the valve are working by watching the valve spring. The exhaust valve is the one that normally stikes because little oil at shut-down after running and if the valve is in the open position when the engine stops. The the valve stem will rust causing the vavle to stick. This would not happen if the engine is oiled down for storage, but most people do not do this.
