Wisconsin back fire

I have a Wisc VH4D that has developed a back fire through the exhaust . I have checked the timing and point gap ( all OK ) . The motor does not back fire when it is cold but starts to when warm or under a load . Could a bad head gasket cause the back fire through the exhaust ? Could there be enough play in the dist shaft to cause the timing to vary enough to cause the back fire? Thank you for any help you may be able to provide . Tom

Probably sticking exhaust valve.

Thanks to very one for their replies . I removed the cyl head on the side that was back firing and the exhaust valve for the #1 cyl appears almost to be polished , where the other valves all had carbon deposits . The valves all appear to be moving and closing fully . Could this polished appearance have been caused by a bad head gasket ? What is the best way to determine if this valve is burnt . I have read some posting that talk about pressurizing the cyl and listening for a leak out of the exhaust manafold . My hearing is poor at best and am afraid I may not hear it .

A burnt valve will lisp while running, it will be noticable. You can try shorting out each plug one at a time to see when the back firing stops. On 2 cycle water in fuel will back fire, never had that on 4 cycle. Your intake valves can hang up/stick when they get hot, that will make back fire. Wisconsin are noted for sticking exhaust valves during storage. Some 2 cycle mix might cure if intakes are sticking. Remember if you use the engine hard it will get a lot hotter than a water cooled engine. Use straight weight or synthetic oil for the crankcase.
