A friend of mine wants me to get some of his old engines running. He had some john deeres and model M IHC and a big economy maybe a 6 horse or so. I had an economy several years ago. It seems that i remember that it ran the opposite direction of the Model M and the John Deeres. Is that right? I just can't get it to run. It has spark, gas, valves are all free and it was overhauled and painted just a few years ago. It looks really good - but I can't get it to run. What direction should it run? It's got mucho compression. Maybe out of time? any suggestions? thanks a bunch.

Which Model are you working on? Webster or WICO mag? Might be something as simple as a condenser, but I've played heck getting Websters just right. Post back - and if you still have problems I've got a couple more sources to try...

it's a 5hp. i think it's a model 5e. anyway the link you sent did the trick. it's a webster mag and the spark timing was off. i adjusted the settings and it fired right off. thanx for the help. any clue as to what it's worth? it's been overhauled and painted and really looks nice and now it runs too. john

Good Job! I've never been that lucky, you better buy a lottery ticket while your luck's running high.

Value seems to be real dependent on locale. Around here they're not worth much and are kind of a novelty. No interest to speak of. But in the midwest to the east coast they seem to bring alot. I'd say any running engine is worth $500 regardless of brand. In the kind of condition you're talking about, $700-$900. Depends on how badly someone wants it. But tell your friend I'd let him keep it at my place for free...you know, what are friends for.

he said he was kind of sorry to sell it now that it ran. he said the guy overhauled it for him and he never heard it run before. apparently that guy couldn't get it running either. anyway, i told him that he could store at my place for free - we're not that good of friends. i'll just have to see what it goes for at his sale. he has 2 jd 1 1/2 hp model e's, the economy, a 11/2 hp M ihc, an lb, a hercules 11/2 hp and a maytag. he never had any of them running before. just said he wanted them. never can tell about some people.

Man, that's a shame! If the sale isn't well publicised, you might have a good shot. I'll bet the JD goes for big bucks, the other for progressively less. I had the same thing happen with an old Stover. An old guy had it, bought it years ago at a sale, but never could get it to start. Said he'd sell it but wasn't sure how much it was worth. I told him I'd like to look it over and see what kind of shape it was in. Ended up it was completely missing a check valve. Brought one back out the next weekend and got it fired up in no time flat. The guys grin was ear to ear, but then he told me it meant more to him running now than before. He's still got it and hasn't shown any sign of wanting to turn loose. I should left it...

Does it have a check valve in the fuel line? The last two engines I worked on, that was their problem.
