hit or miss engine question

What does it mean when a hit or miss engine that is not under load hits almost all the time? Might go 6 or 8 pops in a row before it skips one.

I was looking at one at a tractor show today that is for sale, and that's what it was doing. Most of the ones I've watched before seem to go for quite some time between pops when they're not under load. Is this one perhaps in need of a rebuild, or is there some simpler explanation. It is an old Massey engine.

thanks,
Tom

Was it actually hitting, or was it just going through the motions and trying suck gas up so it could hit? This will happen if there is no check valve. Another possiblity is maybe the timing was off and it was firing too late to get a good hit to coast. If the price is right, I'd but it.

How fast was it running? If it was running really fast, it probably just needs a governor adjustment.

I agree that the governor probably needs some tinkering. If it has a detent blade, it could be worn to the point where it won't stay engaged or it's gap to the pick blade is so great that it takes alot of RPM to get engaged. Better buy it from him so we can see what's wrong!
