I have an older Wisconsin VH4 that takes a wix 51101 spin on oil filter. I can not get the dang thing to not leak without using additional sealing compound. The rubber gasket that comes with it should do it but it allways leaks like crazy. Is this a common problem? Can I upgrade to another filter by changing the mount to a newer type. It should be so easy. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any comments.

Some of those engines had a coarse thread filter, and some had a fine thread filter. I don't have access to my books this evening to try to come up with another # for you, but I suspect there is an alternate filter with a different thread than you are using that would better fit the filter base you have. If you don't have this solved by tomorrow, I'll do some research on it.

Take a look at the threads on the base and the filter you have, and see if they appear to match.

Had a brainstorm... went to WIXFILTERS.COM just now, and checked.

VH4.... 1941-1961..... WIX #51101
VH4.... 1962 and up... WIX #51106

It doesn't say which is which, coarse or fine, but there is the alternate number for you. Please let me know what you find out. Even if you have the pre-1962 engine, it's possible someone could have changed the filter base in the past.

Wix and napa have been haveing problems with thease filters lately. The design was changed and it caused low oil preasure in the engine and too much flow through the filter.they claim to be working on a fix.Other things can happen too,the drain out of the base can be blocked,or the oil tube and restrictor can be missing.

I had some problems wih a wix filter on a lombardini engine and went to a napa filter and solved the problem. It was leaking around the outside of the gasket.
