I have a gentelman trying to sell me 3 engines, one 1 1/2 horse International M that has a broken rocker, one John Deer 1 1/2 horse that was in a barn fire and a Inernational L/A or L/B, my choice he has both. All need restoring. Anyone have any idea what I should give for these engines.

Fairest way is to ask what his absolute bottom dollar is. If it is an amount you can live with, it is a fair price.

Otherwise, they kind of run a range, but if he is in the $600.00 to $750.00 neighborhood- Don't flinch. In some areas of the country this is a ballpark amount, in other areas high, and in other areas low.

If on the other hand, if he is well below that figure- Jump on it.

It really boils down to what you are willing to pay. I know a number of people whose threshold for purchasing something is lower (meaning they will pay higher for lesser quality) than my own. So it really boils down to- "What are you comfortable paying?" After that, do not give it another thought.

The Deere alone, if complete and nothing wrong other then a little tinkering to get it running, is worth $750 here in the northeast.

Original post stated it was in a barn fire. My guess that those engines would bring very little at an auction around here. I would offer $50 total.

Yes, It seems I missed that part, but then again, the way I understand it is that only the Deere was in the barn fire. I did see a running IH M 1 1/2hp go for $725 and a IH LA 1 1/2hp [running] go for $425 recently at auction.Whatever price you agree on should be what you can afford and feel comfortable with.
