I was just given an 84 CID, 4 cylinder Hercules military engine that was used on a gen set. The name plate says it's a 'mil. model 4A084-3'. Does anyone know anything about these engines? I am not at all familiar with them. Are there any 'trademark problems' I should know about? What kind of HP do these things produce? Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

These are the official numbers.

Rating: 20 H.P. @ 3,600 RPM(USG Rating)Weight:265 Pounds
Displacement: 84 Cubic Inches

Apparently very conservatively derated for the military GPU it used to power. Someone gave you one? I can't find one for sale for less than 1500!
Can you arrange to have another one given away? I'm just being serious!

I recently got one myself. It's got a broken connecting rod so I'll have to completely overhaul it now. The Gov rates them at 20 hp. They were built to run on very low octane fuel. Almost anything that will burn. And run in extreme enviroments, hot cold wet, so that's the reason for the low hp rating. I was a mechanice and fuel truck operator in the army and made the mistake of putting some "Mogas" in my car. Octane was so low the car barely ran and knocked like something wanted out of the engine. Probably all the parts trying to escape that crap I put in there.
When run on civilian pump grade fuel 82 or so, they'll produce about 40 hp @ 3600. You can put on a bigger carb as these engines are under carbed, and then shave the heads about .040 and get the power up to around 50 hp. They run very smooth and are quite reliable.

Good deal. I think I saw somewhere that the CR was only like 6:1 on these O84's. I wasn't sure how much you could shave them and still run on autogas though. This could be a bit of an experiment. I have managed to find a source of these for a lot less than the new prices I was looking at when I said 1500. That's not even new price, but it seems like a lot for only 20 HP.
