Hey - I think that the gab between the flywheel & the block was so large because they sometimes put a ring gear for an electric start there. On the dating, I haven't found a way yet. For a while, it seemed like the ones with the Stromberg carbs were older than the ones with teh zenith ones, but I haven't been able to confirm that. If your magneto is an FMJ rather than an FMX, it is older but I don't have a date. If you open up the base, the ones having a pin holding the governor gear in place are older than the ones with a screw, and I do have a serial number on that change. I also guess that the cast iron heads are older than the aluminum, but that may be a WWII thing. They made some with cast iron pistons in 1942-1945, but I have never seen one. Your hp seems a little high to me. Crank start was standard, but you see a lot that were field-modified to rope start. Books are very common on e-bay or at shows. New books are ~$15 from a dealer but the older ones are a LOT better. Gaskets, etc. are still available. I have several, including one with a clutch & a monster with a clutch & gear reduction, and a drive shaft taken off the magneto drive that powered a small hydraulic pump. I also have AGH & AFH, and a 1937 AF, very similar but smaller bore, air vane governor (mounted behind the jug, not over the flywheel), and very square-looking sheet metal. If I can help you at all, let me know.
