I've a model AHH for a while & am just getting interested in it.. Has no nameplate, but is complete & I had it running. (Got the model # from measuring the bore & stroke)Is there any way to tell the year of manufacture by looking at the carb or magneto? Or any other details, as in the construction of the tin shroud over the flywheel. (I've seen a few variations in that).. Anyone know why the flywheel (& shroud) were mounted with a 2" gap between them & the block? Still, it is a narrow engine (Front to back)for its size. (41.? cuin) Mine has a crank to start it with; I can't overcome the compression in one try; have to crank it till there & give a huge yank. (& hope it doesn't backfire)...Seems very crude for a 10 horsepower? engine. Once running, it is great; max RPM is around 2700 or so; governor wants 1500 max. I didn't stress it; a 4" stroke is a lot of reciprocating force, so less RPMs are OK. I haven't been able to find any info on this engine at all, other than it was made between 1941 & 1957, and is the model "ahh".. All cast-iron; but the head is aluminum; spark-plug is 1/2" pipe thread; I believe it has 6 head-bolts. The cylinder "jug" is bolted to the block by 3 or 4 bolts, maybe more....Magneto is a Fairbanks-Morse, externally mounted to a platform on the block; driven by an external coupling; not like the flange-mounted mags on the smaller engines. Any help/info is welcome!

Dear MC , WE have an AHH on a wheat sowing tractor,it needs a ring job due to smoking and burning some oil, but it runs like a trooper, a valve job 26 years ago and a paint job 5 years ago, is the other work done to it, it has a big oil type clutch on the PTO end of it,I'd say it would be good property....ours has an aluminum head, uses a Champion D-16 spark plug.

Hey -

I think that the gab between the flywheel & the block was so large because they sometimes put a ring gear for an electric start there.

On the dating, I haven't found a way yet. For a while, it seemed like the ones with the Stromberg carbs were older than the ones with teh zenith ones, but I haven't been able to confirm that. If your magneto is an FMJ rather than an FMX, it is older but I don't have a date. If you open up the base, the ones having a pin holding the governor gear in place are older than the ones with a screw, and I do have a serial number on that change. I also guess that the cast iron heads are older than the aluminum, but that may be a WWII thing. They made some with cast iron pistons in 1942-1945, but I have never seen one.

Your hp seems a little high to me. Crank start was standard, but you see a lot that were field-modified to rope start. Books are very common on e-bay or at shows. New books are ~$15 from a dealer but the older ones are a LOT better. Gaskets, etc. are still available.

I have several, including one with a clutch & a monster with a clutch & gear reduction, and a drive shaft taken off the magneto drive that powered a small hydraulic pump. I also have AGH & AFH, and a 1937 AF, very similar but smaller bore, air vane governor (mounted behind the jug, not over the flywheel), and very square-looking sheet metal. If I can help you at all, let me know.
