I have a Snapper riding mower with an 8 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. The model number is 195707. It won't start. I turned the screw on the top of the carb all the way shut and slowly opened it while running the starter but the motor still won't start. The engine is only 3 years old. What could be the problem? Please reply to ac3a@usa.net.

I have several older versions of this engine. You might check the plug wire for spark first by inserting a key or some piece of metal in the plug wire and cranking to see if you have spark first. Then, did you leave gas in the tank/carb for several months? I've had this problem when I did.. I've installed shut off valves below my tanks and let them run the carb out of gas before letting them sit for any length of time. Seems to avoid this problem. The evaporating gas in the carb leaves gums that... gum up the carb! If this is the problem, clean the carb with carb cleaner. You may have to take it off to have someone else clean it well if you aren't mechanically inclined. Then, keep old gas out of it and it shouldn't repeat the problem - if my experience is relevant. A pennys worth of prevention, etc. Just my $.02

I thought of that. What do I do if I get no spark? Can't I just plug the wire to the spark plug with the plug out and look for a spark?

I accidently added a couple of fluid ounces of my premixed weed eater gas to a tankful of normal gas. When it started running funny I pulled the plug and cleaned it but it still won't start. What's the story with the screw with the spring on it on the carb above where the fuel line comes in? Did turning it hurt anything? If you will give me your email address I will send you a pic of the engine.

If you get a spark or not determines whether the problem is electrical (most common source) or fuel related. If you get no spark, don't worry about the carb until you fix the electric problem. (Using the plug is fine, if in contact w/engine.) A bit of premix in the gas shouldn't affect anything. The screw w/spring sounds like the fuel mix adjustment (adjusting richness or leaness of the fuel mix), turning it shouldn't hurt anything. Do you have your manual, it should have a diagram of the carb adjustments. Usually you can turn the screw all the way in, then out 3-4 turns. After you start it, then re-adjust mix. Get a good manual if you don't have one, it'll make life easier in the future.

Got it running. I had to fix the handle on the throttle control where it connects to the cable. Once I go it right it started right up. The fuel mix adjusted fine and it runs fine now. Thanks.
