I have a briggs engine on a older model Ariens tiller. I think it is around 3 - 5 horsepower. The carburator will not suck gas up to the engine. and the only time it will attempt to run is when I spray carburator flued into the carb and than choke it. I just replaced the condenser and points so it has a good strong spark. Where in the carburator do I start looking. Is there a place on the internet where I can get a diagram of the carburator.

My name is Tommy and I used to have the same problem. The first thing that you should do is take the carb off of the gas tank. There are two tubes there. You should clean any "trash" off of both filtration screens. Next you should Take the gas tank off and pour the gas into a separate container but leave about 1/4 full. Next throw a couple of VERY CLEAN granite rocks into the tank and swish them around as needed. Take the rockes out and Bolt the gas tank back on, but not the carb. take the diaphram off of the carb and clean any "trash" out of it. I also recommend that you turn the diaphram spring around a little and to really make sure it's clean, replace the diaphram and take an air compressor to blow out every hole you can see. Finally put the carb back together, rebolt it on the gas tank and motor. Another problem could be that your jets may be to tight or too loose. The jet is the little screw sticking out from the right side of the carb with a spring wrapped around it. Try turning it and experimenting with different setting to find the one that best suits you. There are good Briggs manuals available at Lowe's and Home Depot dealing with the flathead Briggs engines. Sounds like a good cleaning of everything that fuel passes thru is in order here. Gas tank, carb, and especially that pesky little fuel screen at the bottom of the carb. Good luck..... ..... P
