I have a mate that has a 2-51. I have looked at it very briefly. It looks in very good condition but he says it seems to be wanting to run away. I do not recognise the governor which has, by the looks of it, calibrated springs. Do you perhaps have a drawing of the governor linkages?
I'd appreciate someones help.

John Deere used this engine in their 435 series diesel Tractor in 1959-60, the Deere dealers may have a listing on it.

Deere no longer has parts in their system for these engines.

Even Detroit doesn't carry part officaly for the 2-53. However 3-53 two valve parts are the same. Purchase the N series 21 to 1 pistons, sleeves and N45 injectors. Starting will be improved and fuel efficiency increased.

Thanks for the info. This engine is a 51 series not a 53 series. The 51 series Detroit Diesel has no valves whatsoever and is a "true" 2 stroke engine. Detroit made this engine for only a few years in the 50's. If you know of anyone who has parts for this engine, please let me know. I have pictures of the engine if you would like to see them. Don't make the cheapo mistake that many do on compression ignition engines which require all the heat and pressure they can get to start. Grinding the valves and seats just sinks them increasing the combustion chamber volume. Doesn't look like much but it's a sizable percentage loss. Always purchase new valves and seats.
