Recently purchased a 1-1/2 HP disassembled and am now acquiring missing parts and starting to put it back together again. Two questions. First, does the flange on the main bearing mount to the inside of the case or the outside? Second: What type of seal fits around the magneto drive gear to prevent oil from being thrown out?
Thanks,

Read my article in GEM Oct.1994 page 37 for how to leak proof a JD E 1 1/2 Magneto shaft. I've done several and none leak. Works on the 3 hp also.

Contact me, and arrange for me do do it, or do it yourself. Address in the article.

The flange goes to the inside so the crankcase cover can form a seal on it. There is a felt ring that fits between the mag gear and the little cover between the gear and the mag. I use silicone under the cover. They are good engines but they are messy and will usually find someplace to blow a little oil out.
