This VH4D runs a Hesston mowing machine from the 60's. Should this engine have a higher compression than 65 to 70 pounds? What kind of ordeal is it to rebuild it if it needs it? What is the best source for parts. Just ordered the manual. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I also have a wisconsin vh4d engine with the same compression as the one you mentioned. This seems low to me, the manual i purchased does not state a normal compression, all it states is that compression will vary on engines. Should you find a normal compression i would be interested in knowing,

I have a picture of it located on the HELP IDENTIFY section of this site. If you could take a look and let me know what you think I would appreciate it very much. Thanks Josh in Oregon

I'm also in the process of rebuilding a VH4D engine. So far not a lot of trouble as I'm still in the tearing down stage. The factory book is pretty good about walking you through the steps. I contacted the factory and they quoted a total of around $700 for all the parts for a complete rebuild. As it stands right now with mine it looks like a gasket set and maybe new exhaust valves. Also I might need rings. This will run with the valve grinding under $400. This is not bad for a engine that the factory wants $2250 plus a core charge of $1000 for a factory rebuild
