Hello, I need some advice. I've always been fascinated by the hit and miss engines and would like to get one. One that needs a little work would be ok. My problem is ... which one for a beginner? I've seen lots of pictures on the internet and I'm very confused about brands, horsepower, buzz box, mag, open crank, etc. Is the IHC La and Lb engines hit and miss or a different breed? So, what would you recommend to a beginner and why. Thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you very much for the replies. I was emailed by a person that had a good suggestion of joining a local club going to a few shows. I don't know much about them hit miss engines and trying hard to advoid some beginners mistakes. Thanks!

I'd find one of the more common ones to make parts easy to get. One in running condition will cost a little more, but it's nice to have a runner to start with to learn on. Join a local club or two and get to know some of the old boys that know what they're doing. Head over to Harry's (The YTMAG of old engines) and ask a humble question or two. I bet one will pick you instead of vice/versa...

I started with a big Petter Stationary Engine.
I suggest you start with a Petter or a BSA Stationary Engine because they are easy to get Parts.
