This is a 'Villiers 2 stroke' engine on an 'Allen Scythe'. I have taken the flywheel off to get it to spark - it now sparks. I now need to put the flywheel back on, but how do I set the timing to the correct position? Is it - when the points are just opening, the piston is just going down? Why are there arrows on the flywheel and engine case? - do I need to line these up?

Please help me, I'm sure it cant that hard to time an engine.

Thanks
Chris

Hi there, I have just aquired four allen scythes, all of which had no spark, and the flywheels were off, now they all have a lovely spark, unfotunately they seem to spark when the pull rope is at it's most damaging position to my limbs. I am fast running out of savlon/tcp etc and would appreciate any hints which may prevent me from any more mutilation even if the kids do think it's funny that daddy can make his arm stop moving so fast. Yours in anticipation. Greg..

I am not familiar with your engine but have some general information. Both magneto and battery ignitions fire when the points open. Ignition occurs just before the piston reaches the top. If ignition occurs too soon the engine will kick back when trying to start it and may make a knocking or pinging noise when running, especially under a heavy load. If ignition occurs too late the engine will be sluggish and will run too hot, possibly with fire coming out the exhaust. I think your marks would line up either when the piston is at the top, or slightly before that when ignition is supposed to occur (when the points open). Be sure you are turning the engine in its running direction when checking the piston position and point opening. Hope this helps. Don

Hi all
Villiers engines usually did not have keyed crankshafts. This is where all go wrong. I am familiar with nearly all Villiers petrol and kerosene engines. If you need help, contact me.NO CHARGE. You may be able to help me one day.
Cheers

I have an Oxford Allen Sythe Mower with a Villiers Model 25 motor. I also need to know how to re-set the timing and replace the Flywheel correctly.

Would greatly appreciate any information you have to offer.

G'Day, I just read your post re: Villiers engines. Perhaps you could help, I've been given a 'Villiers mk 415 HSV-2' 4 stroke stationary petrol engine, approx 3-4hp. Just wondering if you had any material that explains how the throttle arrangement and 'strangler' works. I can get the engine to run, but the throttle cable has come off and all I've got is a lever on the side which covers a small hole?, which if pressed to open the hole causes the engine to suddenly max out and start bouncing around all over the place. I'm only using it to run a vehicle alternator, so I'm just after osme way to smoothly bring it up to about 50% power. If anyone has any info about how the throttle on these engines works that would be great. The plate on the side also talks about an 'ignition switch on the left side of the engine' which must be missing as well?

How do you get the flywheel off? Is it an interference fit?
