I was out at my friends farm today and we were going through a pile of junk that his dad had accumulated and there was a little 4-stroke engine that someone had hooked up to a small water pump. The engine was a JOHNSON and I am guessing it was the same outfit that made the outboard motors, is that correct? Anyways, it had the foot-lever start like you'd see on the old gas-powered washing machine engines. Can a guy still get parts if needed? Is this the same outfit as the boat engine manufacturer? What other applications did they have for those little engines? We're going to try to get it going next time I'm out there, should be a nice little project.

I have been told they were also sold and used as an inboard engine by Johnson who also make outboard engines. REO engines were also used as inboard rigs.

Mike, The Johnson Ironhorse engines were used for wash machines and they were manufactured from 1935 to 1952 with about 250,000 made. You can still get parts for them check out WWW.asecc.com they have info on the engine. When the market for engines for washing machines dried up they were put into lawndoy movers.

There's a guy here in GA that collects those. He had a few at a show recently. One was hooked to a pump. It was pumping water from and back into a bucket. They looked similar to the Maytags. His name is Frank Canfield. Not sure what town. I might have an old list with his number on it.
