The plate on the engine says firing order is 1-3-4-2. The engine will not run correctly when wired that way. It pops and spits thru the carb, etc.

It WILL run correctly when wired 1-4-3-2. What gives?

Thanks,

Nate

The firing order is 1 - 3 - 4 - 2, but the spark plug wire connection at the magneto is 1 - 4 - 3 - 2. The VE4 and VF4 have two crankshaft throws, 180 degrees apart, instead of the conventional 4 throws at 90 degrees. Combine this with 90 degrees between cylinder banks, and you have a firing interval of 0 - 180 - 270 - 90 degrees between cylinders. This gives the VE and VF their distinctive exhaust note. Wisconsin handled this "odd firing" arrangement with a magneto rotor that turns at crankshaft speed. The extra spark serves no useful purpose other than to allow the use of a somewhat standard magneto. I wrote this assuming you have a magneto. Some very early engines had an "engine speed" distributor, which has the same wire hook up as the magneto. Later models had a more standard "half speed" distributor, which has a 1 - 3 - 4 - 2 hook up.

My engine DOES have a distributor. The proof is in the pudding here and the engine runs well hooked up 1-4-3-2. That must mean that I have an "engine speed" distributor. I need to chew on the rest of your info for a while. When you say very early, what years would my engine likely have been built?

Thanks for your help.

Nate
