early JD "L" use the same type engine. The earlier ones were a IXB Hercules reduced to 2 cylinders.Later JD started making it own motor. The Hercules motor block and bell housing are 2 seperate pieces,JD,when they started making made unit in one complete piece.A friend of mine had a "L",we found a brand new 2 cyl Hercules on a "Bean" sprayer, took motor mount from Avery A and made fit,it bolted up to bell housing

I am not certain as to when the first LUC engine was built. I have never seen an unstyled "LUC", the first styled "L" was built in mid 1938. What seriela # is your unit, we have two of them.

Steve, my ser.# is C14788. I am not sure what application the engine had, when I got it, it was free standing. There probably is a way to determine thr year from the ser.# but I do not have that info.

Van, its a model name of a JD power unit used on JD combines and swathers. LUC is on the ser.# tag. The engine is a vertical 2 cyl. with a radiator and magneto. The one I have starts with a handcrank.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the timing settings for an LUC, my dad got one and we have been having a hard time getting it in time.
Thanks,
Roger Anderson
