What model might it have been?

Around 1939 or 40, Dad bought a small IH single cylinder engine which was belted to the Delaval milker vacuum pump on our non-electrified farm. This helped my mother milk 12-15 cows while he worked until dark in the field. The flywheel, I believe was higher than the crank, driven by a gearset off the crank. As a child, I was afraid of it as it was faster turning and louder than the John Deere that chuffed away in the well house. The IH was a lot more compact and quite reliable.

Probably an LB. Was it an enclosed crankcase?

Yes. I believe the water tank was open, but I am not sure of that. It ran rather fast compared to the other single cylinder engines of that day, other than the little B & S under mother's washing machine
