Clinton 2-cycle questions

I have acquired an odd-looking Clinton 2-cycle model VS200 2172. This looks like a small vertical shaft engine that was rotated so that the shaft is horizontal, and the piston is also horizontal. The gas tank is mounted on the top, and the carb is mounted such that it is obvious that the motor is meant to be mounted like this.

Does anyone have any information, especially owners manual, parts diagram, service manual? What type of oil/gas ratio should I use with modern 2-cycle oil? What were these used on?

Thanks.

Zira: I have the parts list for the VS-200-2172 $5.00 which includes S & H. Also have the Manual of Maint. and Overhaul Inst. this is for all Clinton Engines over 100 pages $30.00 which incl. S & H..I can tell you it was made before 1958 as this is the latest edition of the parts manual. Let me know if interested and will send you address to send check money order or cashiers check...Roe PS Have a few Clinton parts and can give you sources for others if I do not have.

A Power band, is the point from low to high rpm where most of the engine power is generated.
Engine design determines it. Especially with two strokes, it is adjusted by the height of the exhaust port and exhaust system. The lower the exhaust port the lower in the rpm range the power comes on, it also dies off, soon after it starts. With the exhaust port high in the cyclinder, the power comes on at high rpm, but has very little at low rpm.
That is why the modern two stroke dirt bikes have what is called power valves. They lower the exhaust port at low rpm and raise it at high rpm, this creates a very broad power band.

I have an engine like that, the 3 horse model. They were a popular engine made in the USA. They were popular for go-carts, and I have seen tham on lawnmowers. There is even an ad showing two of them mounted on the back of a go-kart. The series is called "Panther" They are a two-stroke wonder for carters. I have mine bolted to a motor scooter I've built.

It sounds like what they called a go cart engine. I have one on a device called a Wards Clear-z-all, sort of an early version of a weed eater with a bad case of giantism. This unit came with a 10" 3 tip blade for clearing weeds. Options included a roto tiller head (small) a water pump, and a 10" saw blade. That thing would reduce a full grown man to his knees running it for half an hour.
