A Corliss Valve is a device widely used on large stationary steam engines to allow steam into the cylinder as well as for exhausting expanded or used steam. What makes the Corliss Valve unique and made it very popular is that it's semi-rotary trip design allowed it to open and close very quickly. This is critical with a steam engine so that the pressure drop going into the cylinders is minimized. The other great feature is that the Corliss Valve uses separate intake and exhaust valves so that the intake valves are not cooled by exhaust steam and thus remain hot reducing condensation. The Valve is known for it's great efficiency and is yet simple. Check out the link below. This shows an engine in the UK with a Corliss Valve. Then click on "Corliss Valve" for a detailed sketch. I hope this is helpful information to you. Let me know if you have any more questions.
