Hi all - I have a 13-year-old Simplicity lawn tractor with a 12 H.P. Briggs & Stratton I/C engine. The first two Saturdays I mowed with it this year it ran fine. On the third Saturday it started blowing white smoke and stalling. I discovered that the crankcase was full of a mix of gasoline and oil (I had changed the oil before my first mowing this year). I changed the oil again and then the engine ran OK. The same thing happened to me once before (about 2 years ago). So I figure either the gas is getting into the crankcase while the engine is running (may happen if the piston rings were shot) or when it's not in use, gas could get in the crankcase by leaking from the carburetor, through the intake manifold and maybe through a crankcase vent. I've taken to screwing the carb. needle valve shut when the mower is not in use, and I suppose I could put a shut-off valve in the fuel line. Has anyone had a similar problem with a B.S. engine? I'm doubting the rings are shot because the engine puts out good power and doesn't smoke a lot (unless the oil is diluted with a lot of gasoline). BTW, this is a one-cyl. engine with a vertical crankshaft. Thanks in advance!

what you have is a normal briggs problem, briggs puts a brass seat in these engines and the dirt erodes the brass seat. The only problem with your solution, is that if you forget to turn the fuel off, you will have a 500.00 boat anchor from lack of lubrication, The best thing to do is go to your local briggs dealer and get the following 2 part numbers 270511 bowl gasket and part number 394682, that is a stainless steel seat and needle assy, follow the directions in the package and in about 5 minutes you have solved all of you problems, unlees the brass float has a hole in, then, you need to replace that also. If you mention this to your local dealer he might tell you it won't work, it will, I put 30-40 of these stainless seats in place of the brass ones every year.

Hi again - Rather than take the carburetor apart in the middle of "mowing season" I opted to put a shut-off valve in the fuel line. I've only used the mower once since I put the valve in, so it's too early to say that the problem is solved. But so far, so good -- engine runs fine now (helped by a new spark plug).

I have run into this quite often. From my dealings with the problem it is not unique to B&S. I've seen several Kohlers do the same. The cause of the one's I've dealt with was the float in the carb. It either picks up a piece of trash and gets hung open or develops a hole in the float and then the float fills with gas causing it to sink in the bowl and not shut off the fuel when full. Fuel then floods the cylinder and runs past the rings(gas will readily pass by rings). Good luck, Kevin

I have one doing something similar to that and the problem is the carb is wore out. You might try rebuilding your carb they are pretty straight forward.

This happens when gas bypasses the needle valve in the carburetor. Can be caused by worn needle/seat in the carb. or by trash in the fuel. Best fix is to clean and rebuild the carb.
