A friend of mine is in need of a magneto for a 3 hp Type E JD engine. Does anyone know of a place that sells them on the internet? Also, he is in need of either a manual on this engine or at least a brakedown sheet on it.

THANX
DAVID

David, I have a repo of the instruction and parts manual for the J D Model E engines. Price is $6.50 which includes S&H.

I was wrong about the HP. It is a 1 1/2 hp not a 3hp.

The 3 and the 1 1/2 hp E engines have the same drive gear. So it makes no differance which generator you buy for a 3 or a 1 1/2 E. Now to test to see if the generator is good you need a VOA meter or a wire, sparkplug wire. mount the generator in a vise spin the gear while holding the wire to the base of the generator. As the gear and shaft is turning drag the wire across the base and let it pull off the base. As it leaves the base you should see a spark. Do not hold the wire away from the Generator and turn the Gear and shaft. You will not get a spark. It is best to use a VOA Meter to test the Generator for you can turn it slow and fine the highest voltage in the generator. Time the Generator to the cam gear to the hottest spark. The E's run better. Not always is the endention on the armiture the best place to time the Generator. Also make sure that the bushing in end cap on the Generator is not worn out and dragging. This will not let the Generator spark, as well as a dirty armature or bad or dirty carbon brush's. There is a Guy in Colorado who makes a aftermarket Generator for the E engines and if you did not have the old next to the new you could not tell them apart except he has his name on it. I will try to find his business card and give you his phone number and name.

I have a 1-1/2 mag from a John Deere that is all apart in a coffee can. I am sure it is fixable. Email me if you are interested and I'll see if I can find it in my dungeon(shop). Thanks, Tom
