I've got an IHC LA and need to know if the mag keeps its magnetic field over a long period of inactivity. I know it has been over 40 years since the LA has been used. Do they need to be reenergized or polarized? I'm just about to tear into the engine for a complete restoration.

I just finished a LB that hadn't run in about 25 years. All we had to do with the mag was to clean the points, check the condenser, and set the points at about .015. Good luck Rick

The magnet on this type of magneto is not likely to lose its power from years of inactivity, unlike the horseshoe magnet-type magnetos of the older engines. If the primary coil has been protected from the elements, I would clean and gap the points first, and then see if it throws a spark.

If the spark does not appear strong and have a blue tint to it a rebuild is probably a safe bet.
You can get some info on doing it yourself from a couple different sites on the web. Try a search for magnetoes. I bit the bullet and sent my last engine mag to Branson and was very pleased with the quick service, price and it worked great when I installed on the engine.
