I have found a stationary engine in a neighbours farm. It has been out side under cover. The big problem I have is the piston is stuck in the rear portion of the bore, about mid stroke. If anyone has a good way to free the piston without destroying it I would be greatful.

soak the piston and rings in lemon juice, the citric acid will disolve the rust. set the engine in the vertical position (piston up) pour in lemon juice, put air preasure in cylender to force juice around piston and rings, tap on bottom of piston head with a dead blow hammer and a wooden stick (old hammer handle). hit & miss enterprises has all the parts for that engine

I have taken an old sparkplug brokeout the glass and put a grease zerk in where the glass was by welding or taping it. Put the sparkplug in the head of the engine use your grease gun and start pumping grease it may take a tube or to but it will push out the piston.

Be very carefull about using the grease gun method of moving rusted pistons. What usually happens is something will break, not trying to sound like a know it all but I make a living doing or undoing mechanical and electrical problems. If you can find it get some Kroil it is a very good penetrating oil give it plenty and give it plenty of time to work and it usually does if you hit a stumbling block contact me and I will try and help you out as it would be a shame to break anything on such an old engine as I have several and have had a lot of fun repairing them the last one I did was a 1912 6HP stover and it is really a nice running engine. Thanks for the info. I did not like the idea of the grease either as first of all it would take a lot of grease. I have a cup of diesel fuel in the cylinder now and am hoping that this will free it up. If not I will try your penetrating oil.

Thanks craigm. I will have to work to get the plug out but I will try this method and let you know of the results.

The grease zerk idea does work but it can be risky. Remember that it took a long time for that piston to get stuck and it may take awhile to get it unstuck but these engines require alot of patience. The grease puts alot of pressure on the cylinder and I have seen them break. Not a pretty sight. Good luck.

I have not given the grease method a try and will not either. I have a cup of diesel fuel in the cylinder now and am waiting for the results of this to see if it works. I will keep the board informed of my progress
