I have a 3.5hp Briggs & Stratton horizontal lawnmower engine.
It runs for about 5 mins then smokes and back fires then cuts out, and is difficult to re-start.
Ive just had it serviced, but I doubt the servicer run it long enough. Any ideas

I have a 6HP 21-inch MTD mulching push mower from B&S with very simular problems. In fact, the mower would backfire like crazy whenever I would release the safety brake control handle. I would have to keep grabbing the safety handle and release it a few times before it would cut off. Then it would be difficult to restart. It finally got to a point where it would not start. I was told that I never put oil in it... I KNOW BETTER. I used it all last year. Did you uncover anything about the cause of your problems. I haven't had my mower a year yet. Thanks for any info you might share.

It may have a falty gas cap vent. I don't know it you have tried this or not but loosen the cap some and then start it if it stays running well just get a new cap, if it doen't, well you know its not the cap.
