I have installed new rings, seated the valves, have good blue spark from magneto and it will not start. It wants to fire out the exhaust one time and the next time it will fire out the carb. Caught the engine on fire. The valve settings are: intake .008, exhaust .010. The mark on the magneto gear and the cam gear are in line. What is my problem? Thanks

Check that you have the correct firing order. The firing order for a mag is not the same as for the half speed distributor. The mag is 1432 and the distributor is 1342.
Hope it helps.

If this is a 2 Cyl, could it be #1 and #2 wires are switched?

Since the cam shaft runs at 1/2 speed, you could be timing 180 off phase...

Never had anything other than a magneto v-4, I vaguely remember the mag 'spert telling me to position the rotor a certain way when it was installed on the timing marks. 27 years ago, the rememberer is not what it used ta be.

are you sure that the timing marks are at the right spot? We bought a rebuilt AHH Wisc. which had never been run. We found out why when it almost tore my arm off (fired halfway up compression stroke while cranking). Turned out that the timing marks were timed to the wrong gears (mag gear to crank mark, crank gear to mag mark)Heckuva job to sort out. Sorry so long winded, hope it helps.

Your engine is firing with the valves open. This means that either the valves are not closing properly, or that the engine is out of time. Since it is backfiring through both the carburetor and the exhaust, I would first check to see that the valves are seating properly. Did you remove the crankshaft or camshaft? Are they timed to each other properly? When the engine backfires through the carb, the intake valve is not completely closed when the engine fires. When it backfires through the exhaust, the exhaust valve is not completely closed when the engines fires. You may need to recheck your valve clearances, and then check to see if the valve job was done properly.
