my old f 163 HELP PLEASE HELP

hello everyone, I need help with the timing on my welder it is run by a wisconsin f 163 (inline 4)recently I decided to rebuild her ,I lost the timing on the engine crank to cam to governor,I see the dots on the gears this engine does not posess a timing chain just gears could someone please help me tell me the right way to time this engine I have absolutely no knowledge on these engines specially governors T.Y.

When number 1 cylinder (by radiator end) is on compression and drive slot is horizontal install mag with rotor pointing at number one in cap and put wires on in firing order from off block or manifold. Continental manuals are available online also.

It might be an F 162. The F 163 is almost the same but newer and I think had a distributor? I think most 163's also had "Red Seal" cast in the exhaust manifold. Is your welder a Lincoln SA 200 or a Miller Big 40? They both used the F 163 and early models may have both had the F 162. I know the Lincoln did. I had a 1959 Airco with an F 140 Continental. Good machine. A Lincoln repair shop could help you. The Continental dealer up here used to have exchange engines for SA 200's because they were so popular. Dave

yes it is a sa-200 with the f 163 RED SEAL I absolutely love it purs like a kitten and welds awesome .I sold a ranger 9 and got this instead a bit heavier ,,,but I got the truck to haul it (1 ton h.d.), and the means of loading and un-loading, this machin is for my pipe jobs ONLY ,usual welding will be done with other machines I possess(lol my guys dont want to be seen with this machin ...it looks old they say)

The engine is actully a Continental. Wisconsin now owns them.
Normally the dots go together with #1 on compression (firing). The governer does not care about timing.

actually the governor does care about timing,because the magneto is bolted through the front cover to the governorso the timing is critical. so as I found out on my own (trial and error) timing crank to cam; dots align(thus TDC) then on the opposite side of the cam gear there is a dot, should lign up the dot with the ones on the governor thus placing the magneto rotor on no.1 spark plg position. anyways T Y to all those who have read my message

If i remember correct the lugs or slots for the mag have to be horizontial or crosways, when the engine is at tdc. Its either that way or verticle.

I'm not real sure but I think in the 38 to 40 HP range on an SA 200. They last a long time in an SA 200 because they rev slower than usual. If I remember right only 1450 RPM full load and I think 1550 no load. Dave
