continental F163 F163A differences

Help! Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a continental F163 & a F163A is.I found a replacement F163 to replace my tired F163A will they interchange? THANX

I saw a FA163 that was a military engine.

FWIW--the older bearing books and gasket catalogs I have that list the F163 don't list an F163A...
However, the 86 Fed Mog book shows "early F163" and "late F163"...the only difference I see is the "early" had different rod inserts for cyls 2,4 and cyls 1,3, whereas the "late" used the same insert on all four...
A point to consider is, if your found engine is out of different equipment or from a different use, whether it's timing, breathing, power curve, etc will be suitable for your need. Good luck.

Not sure what the "A" on it is for? There is a Continental L head quick reference parts chart and ID charts and overhaul manual available to download at Wisconsin Motors website. The quick reference shows most all the diffrent front covers for different mounting applications. Might email or call them to find out or try Montes too montesequipment.com
