Old 4 cyl flathead Continental Engine

I have an old Continental engine on a homemade buzz saw and splitter. It has a plate on the side of the engine that displays the serial number and motor number as well as a bunch of patent numbers. However I need to know how to fine out what the engine type is in order to purchase a new valve and ring set.
How and/or where do I find the actual engine type number?

If it has a tag, it tells you the model number.

Noncompos is right! I was thinking F for flat
head. F head as in the old Willys jeep 4 cyls.
(they made a f head 6 cyl in jeepsters and cars)

Do a web search for Monte's Equipment in Chicago,Illinois, and then ask for Gerry Moon. He is the Guru for Continental engines and they have a very complete stock of NOS parts and all the factory records and build sheets. He is very knowledgable and accomodating.

Serial # should start with the model #
For instance: F152XXXXX XXXXX is a 152 cubic
inch f head engine.
Gasket sets should be available from NAPA and
others. Lots of Continentals used in forklifts.
I've even seen them on pull type farm choppers,
(Fox River)Irrigation pumps. Millions made, many
Thousands around yet! "Powerful as the Nation"
was their trademark.

Greygoat is mostly right on, except the F's in my books are L-heads (flatheads). (F-heads have one valve in block, one in head).
While I don't find an F280 in my stuff, my stuff is nowhere near complete.
Cont F's (and SOME of their other letter-designation) engines used cid in engine model number (F140=140ci, F-226=226ci, etc) but others DIDN'T use cid in engine model #.
Older Cont engines used different letter designation for different uses (F4140 for 4cyl 140ci truck eng, F140 for ag/ind uses, PF140 for power unit uses) BUT John S has advised truck eng's have timing chain, others timing gear, and rotate in OPPOSITE directions (!!).
Best sugg: take all info from tag to NAPA or similar store if easy; if long trip call Gerrard Moon at Montes Equipmt (obsolete Cont parts source) (gerrardmoon@[email protected]), who's highly recommended by many here. Good luck.
