A neighbor has a John Deere 1 1/2 hp hit & miss engine .he saw my old tractors and asked if I knew anything about his engine, I told him that I do not, but will try to find out for him. His question is how do you time it, and how do you set the magneto. any help will be great

Also if he call Hit N Miss enterprises at (440) 272-5335 they probably have a reproduction about manual for it. John Deere was still selling the manuals 10 years ago, also.

You line up the marks on the crank gear and the cam gear, and the cam gear an mag gear at the same time, the cam gear has two marks and will only line up with the other two in one position. It has marks on the flywheel for spark and exhaust, you want to trip the ignitor when the marks line up with the pushrod, and then turn to the exhaust open mark and have zero valve cleance just when the mark is even with the pushrod.

Quite often there is a small horseshoe shaped clip on the magneto actuating rod that when pulled will retard the spark timing for starting. Once it is running the clip can be pushed back in to allow proper running spark timing.
