Old Cement Mixer Motor

Hi everyone, I'm looking at purchasing my first old engine. I found a concrete mixer with an international LA, or LB on it. I'm going out to look at it tomorrow. What should I look for?? He is asking $250.00 for motor and mixer, all I want is the motor. Is there any value other than scrap to the Mixer?

Hi. I see you said I hope its not too addictive, boy you got a shock coming. I started collecting last year. Went to collect my first engines last easter, which grew from 1 (a 2hp sundial open crank) to 7 in the month before I could pick em up. I am about to go pick up a 8hp Tange, this is about 125 I now have collected in 18 mths, about 90 good goers. I have an LB also. Its not REALLY addictive. Good luck and cheers Graeme.

He's been trying to sell that one for awhile. Must be in tough shape as they usually go fast.
Uncovered like that It could be stuck pretty good or cracked. LA/LB engines are quite common so it's not much use to spend much on a junker. You from around the Twin Cities?

Shakopee is where the mixer is, if I remember right.

Yep, from Chaska. the mixer is in Prior Lake somewhere... I'm gonna take a look tomorrow.. I was figuring it might be worth 100 to 150....

It would be nice to see a complete unit like that restored instead of scrapped. The mixer looks to be very heavy duty. It would be a shame to see it junked instead of turning it into a working display.

Let me know what you find out. I almost went to look at it myself but got busy. And usually if an engine doesn't sell right away, it's junk.

Will,
I went and picked it up this afternoon. I did not buy the entire mixer. It is a very heavy duty unit with the lower section being cast ironm I did see several cracks in it.
The engine was in a lot better shape than I expected. It had been coveredall the time, still has compression, no cracks in the water tank, still has gas in the tank... pretty stinky stuff though. It is a LB engine. Now to get the tank cleaned out, etc. I want to see if I can get it to run before doing too much to it..

Now you need the 3-5 and the LA's etc.

He said he had 2 or 3 e-mail him about it, but I was the only one to go look at it..I hope it's not too addicting! I got the raised eyebrows from the better half when she saw it....
Do you have any of these critters? If so, I may need to tap your knowledge....Where in MN are you located?

Thanks Will! I got it to fire up last night! Now that I know it will run I plan on tearing it down a bit, cleaning it up and repainting. The wife wasn't too happy about me stinking up the house.... Guess I need to take it outside the next time I start it.

Depending on how bad the mixer itself is, you may be able to sell it to a contractor.
