I have a couple of IH LB engines and keep having a little problem.They tend to carbon up way too quick and hold a valv open.Have had to pull the head on one and scrape the carbon off,ruining the head gasket.What should I do to prevent this from hapening? I use the same type of gas I use in my pickup.What about aditives,Ihave tried carb cleaner added to gas,but didn,t help much.Help..... ..... ..... ..... .....

Run it a little bit leaner so it burns a bit hotter.

To remove carbon you can also mist some water in the intake while the engine is running.

SeaFoam is also a good idea.

Thanks for the help.The valves were held open by the accumilation of carbon-soot, being very thick around the valves.Thanks again..... ..... .....

if you are not using them a lot the gas gets old and will do the same thing you are describing. Use PURE gas, we run into this problem all the time with lawn mowers using cheap gas. You might also run Sea Foam in your gas all the time, it is a stabilizer and works great. I use straight non alchohal gas in my all my old engines and never had that problem. One other thing to check is the felt seals around the valves stems, make sure they are clean and not full of old oil, I am sure these can cause problems with sticky valves
