I picked up an old engine driven welder at the auction the other day and am trying to get it started. I have no fire. The motor is a contintal flathead four. It has a Wico mag, model X, spec XH-1113, ser no. 2-032012. When I pulled the cap the rotor came off with it. It's a gear drive rotor so how do you time this mag? Thanks for any help, PK.

Try replacing or cleaning points and replace condenser and suppose you are doing that. The rotor has raised line mark by one tooth that you line up with beveled teeth on the steel gear.

Thanks for the reply. I see what you mean. I pulled the mag off so I could see inside. It's in a real tight spot behind the carb. The problem I have is the stop button terminal is always grounded, checked with a ohme meter. I would think that this terminal would be isolated as pushing the button stops the engine. Am I thinking about this right? PK

Yes, the stop terminal should be insulated with fibre washers or plastic bushings of some type and do crack and fail. When you check it connected with a meter like that with points closed or coil connected to it will show a connection to frame and that's showing good continuity of coil. If washers are cracked just replace them as a ohm meter won't give a test on that like when it has fire on it running.
