Timing on International M - ??

I am trying to set the timing on an International M engine. I had to do it from scratch since I did not dissamable it and there are no timing marks on the cam gear. I think I am close but do not understand why the exhaust valve starts to open immediately after the ignition takes place. To me, it should open about 180 degrees later. I have the engine firing, but it will not stay running. The mag is hot so I think it is still timing or carberation. I did get all timing marks to line up properly as shown in the diagram. Is this engine designed to start to open the exhaust vavle so soon? Any other pointers would be appreciated.

Did you try flipping the lever on the mag side that says start/run?

The M's can be sweet running machines but are sometimes quite touchy.

It is a type L mag. I do not see a start/run switch. In order for everything to line up as shown in the diagram, there in only one way the cam gear teeth can fit. It is frustrating there are not any timing marks as reference on the crankgear and cam gear.

Thanks for letting me know it is an L mag.

I have a 3 hp with one on it.

My 1 1/2 has a WICO and has the lever I mentioned.

I'll see what I can find.

I re-checked everything and finally got the engine to fire 1,2 maybe 3 times. The rpm drops slower and slower until it quits. I wonder if the engine has low compression or the valves need ground. My arm is about to fall off so I need to quit for a day. How many turns do you unscrew the fuel needle valve?

I started one of my stationary engines today and all I did was turn out the needle valve a few turns. When it started I just kept turning it in until it ran right. And as it warmed up I turned it in more.

Do you have a dual carb on yours?

Yes if you mean Kerosene and gas. I went ahead and pulled the head and piston and checked the valves and cylinder bore. The piston rings have a .50 end gap which I am sure is too much. The bore measured out good. I believe my problem is lack of compression. I could earlier hear compression going through the crankcase. I appreciate all the help.

Just had a thought. Did you try unhooking the mag wire and running it on a coil and battery?

These things don't take much compression to run if you are just playing with them.

Your mag could need recharging.
