TIMING THE CRANKSHAFT TO THE CAM GEAR ON A MH HIT AND MISS

We are trying to get our 1.5 hp Massey-Harris Hit, and Miss gasoline engine in working order. There is no timing mark on the crankshaft gear that turns the cam gear. There is an �o� between two teeth on the camgear. There is the word �spark� stamped on the face of the mag side flywheel. If �spark� on the flywheel is lined up at 9:00 or in line with the valve rod then when should the zero mark on the cam gear be??
Is the timing mark on the fly wheel gear lined up with the key way in the crank shaft?

HI. Most hit and miss or throttle governed for that matter are just that, hit/miss Turn the crank in the correct direction. clockwise when you crank with the right hand and the left is on the head side. Make the valve just start to open when the piston is at bottom stoke. (out going in) set it this way and if it has an ignitor it should trip only a few mills from the piston going right in on the NEXT engine revolution. intake, compression and then exhast are the strokes. Hope this helps. If all fails make srue the ignition system has a bright spark. Graeme

Hi I would like re revise my reply. The timing on most of these engines are hit or miss. you got it or its a mile out. also strokes.. intake, compression (fires at top), power then at the bottom of the power stroke as the piston moves back up, the exhaust stroke starts. The exhaust valve should start to open just before the piston starts up & close right at the top of this stroke.(piston at bottom...opening, at top closed again) Sorry for confussion. It was late. I'm NOT a MASSEY expert, but, in general, if you fiddle with the cam timing so the ignitor or mag "trips" when the SPARK" mark on the flywheel lines up with the exhaust valve rod, the cam timing will be correct.
