VG4D bore size question

I have a ex-millitary 1966 VG4D engine that"s stuck, so, I pulled the heads to take a look, turns out #3 is badly fused, no surprise there. While I was in there I took a look at the markings on the pistons and measured bore sizes, the markings don"t match the part number in my manual (looks like a MIL #), and the bores measure 3.45 not 3.5 as I expected. The engine number is a little hard to read, but it really looks like VG4D, do I have the engine number wrong, or is 3.45 STD? Thanks Glenn

That spec sheet is wrong. The bore size is 3.50 inches.

That's what my original Wisconsin manual MM-267-B for VG4D says in specs section is 3 1/2" bore, 4" stroke, 154 cubic inch displacement. I&T shop manual Large Air Cooled Engines 1988 & prior, # LES1-4 gives same specs and 37 HP rating. I&T shows VE4 engines were 3"x 3.25" bore and stroke. VF4 engines 3.25" x 3.25". VP4 3.5" x 4". VH4 3.5" x 4". VR4D 4.25" x 4.5". V460D & V461D 3.5" x 4". V465D 3.75" x 4". None at 3.45 bore ??

Guy, I used both an inside micrometer and then a digital caliper, I checked cyl's 1, 2, 3 (4 is stuck at TDC), and took reading at several depths in each bore. There wasn't much variation between the bores and the measurements within each bore, I'll post the markings stamped on the top of piston #1, maybe someone has an xref for Mil p/n's. Glenn

Glen, thanks for the info, it's an ex-Mill engine for sure, radio shield mag cap, wires, and sparkplugs, also has a big brass tag (hard to read) that has states that it was attached to a 350gpm fuel pump and the sheet metal is painted OD. I got the 1&3 cylinders off, cleaned 'em up, and checked the bores, same reading of 3.44. There's another brass tag on the lower part of the engine but it's unreadable, I'll try to clean it up, and highlight the lettering, maybe it has the rebuild specs. The inside of the crankcase is painted orange, the outside blue, every thing else is OD, based on that and almost no wear in the cylinders, I'd guess that somebody put a new short block in an old Mil engine, and then didn't use it.

Also if yours was really military it would have been stamped MVG4D. I have a MVF4D military engine with the radio shielded magneto on it.

Rebuilt military engines usually have a tag on them with specs it was rebuilt to. Original VG4D manual I have says 3 1/2" bore but the new engines they still build disagrees with that on specs sheet.
