I have a 1950 or so Fed-Mog catalog, and in the Continental engine section it shows, under "Exchange Rods", 3C with the forging # W5D-500. It shows for a 4 cyl 31/8 x 41/4 W5 engine from serial # 565541 thru 565590 and after serial # 567306 (altho I think it means 567306 and after, as another line is for the W5 thru 567305) and the W5D engine, but it gives no years. (various other entries go back into the late 20's). While my Continental info is highly incomplete, and limited to truck, tractor, etc, engines, I find no W5 or W5D; the closest is a W10 and W11 (both 4cyl) listed as in the early 30's. I find no Star tractor of that time (there was one in the late teens with a LeRoi engine). However, there were Star cars and some kind of Star trucks produced 22-27/28 by Durant Motors (Lansing, MI) AND a mystery Star truck in 1919 and 1920, and possibly other years, that apparently was not connected with Durant. (There were several other Star trucks but all back in the teens, and a Star Six Fleetruck built by Durant in 1927, but the name implies a 6cyl engine.) I have a 1924 piston catalog that has cars and trucks listed together, with two Star listings: one with no ID other than "all models", no years shown, using a Cont 4cyl engine, and the other listing three truck models for 1919 using a Cont4cyl engine (the catalog lists a few as early as 1915, but mostly 1917/19 thru 1923) It therefore seems possible --repeat--possible the "Star" on your box may refer to the Star car or one of the Star trucks, and that the Cont W5 and W5D engines were used between 1924 and 1930 or so.
