Thinking ahead on a project that I would like to build someday. I'd like to build a train engine that could be used in parades. What I have in mind would look much like a small steam locomotive but would likely be powered with compressed air. Would convert a propane or nh3 tank, and regulate the air pressure. I would love to do real steam but not sure if dealing with a boiler is prudent. Need information about existing steam engines, kits or prints, that could be purchased for this purpose. At this point everything is in the concept phase.

I think you could run a gas powered air compressor.You would have an engine anyway, it would look like an old fashioned engine if built like a steam engine but using air to drive wheels like old locomotive.Using pistons run by air instead of steam.

You won't be able to run long enough on a captive air tank. When I was a teen I got to play with a gas loco in a couple parades. It was a 4-4-0 with a big Briggs and a three speed out of a car, about eight feet long, super quiet, pulled five cars and it was a BLAST.

When you refer to 4-4-0 are you talking about displacement, stroke, or something else entirely.

4-4-0 refers to the wheels. 4 front wheels, 4 drivers, no rear wheels.
